Sometimes I wonder how we made it this far when I see some of the dumb stuff people do such as the dumbass on his bike on the highway this weekend. I dont think you should ever be on the highway on a bike.

Kinja'd!!!

now you may be confused, lots of people take motorcycles on the highway. That is true and I have no problem with that. This guy, we’ll call him Dredlocks Dave was on a bicycle. This was a highway, not a busy state road but a full on 60 mph highway. To make this even dumber, he was wearing a backback, and his friend on a skateboard was holding the backpack and was being towed by the guy on the bike down the road. Definitely a future Darwin hall of famer.

yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s illegal. I get nervous enough riding next to a 45mph road. Riding on a highway is asking to die.

I’ve seen it before — not on an interstate highway, but on an unlimited access highway with decent sized shoulders. It’s scary for drivers, but not illegal in most places. I always try to remember that most highways were local roads for a long time before they got widened and speed limits raised.

My rule of thumb is that if it’s elevated and/or has entrance/exit ramps, stay the fuck away if you’re walking or biking.

Bring him to me. I’ll toss my folder to his direction repeatedly.

Seen it many times. I do not know why there isn’t a blanket rule something like:

“You can’t use a road unless your vehicle can maintain 80% the posted limit on all grades”

With exceptions or permits being granted for stuff like tractors/oversized loads with restrictions on use and time of day.

Maybe there is?

Highway is too vague. In some places, it means this (U.S. Highway 77):

Kinja'd!!!

In other places, it means this (also U.S. Highway 77):

Kinja'd!!!

It’s legal (perhaps not smart) for bicycles to take a lane on either.

Limited-access interstates are a different matter. There are minimum speeds for interstates.

In some areas, out west in particular, it is legal to ride on the interstate since it is the only road available.

nope, we’re talking on/off ramps, elevated over passes

Yep, minimum speed rules apply. I’ve yet to meet the guy that can maintain 45 mph on flat land for any length of time. Even the monsters that ride the tour de france can’t do that!

I came up on somebody in dark clothing at 10pm riding along in the right lane of a divided highway. No lights, no reflectors, nothing. Thing is, there’s a lot of surface streets in the area he should have been on, so I can’t think of a single reason why they would have been out there. I didn’t hear anything else about it, so I assume they made it out ok, but they’re lucky it was me that came up on them and not my (at the time) girlfriend who was right behind me, she had really poor eyesight at night, I’m not sure she would have seen him/her in time.
